Emmy Trends: Understate It

I tend to watch red carpet events in my NYC apartment, with a pen and paper to jot down notes while the pre-shows take place, when I can see the jewelry up close and when one of the actresses might mention the name of the designer she's wearing, so I can blog even before I get the info in from the associations and PR agencies.
This year, I am out in LA and forgetting the time difference, totally missed the pre-shows but did catch the arrivals for the 62nd Prime Time Emmy Awards. I also watched the show, for the first time with an interesting mix of friends, a jewelry designer (who owns her own beautiful store out here) and her husband as well as a director (whose worked on award shows) , his wife and  both family's kids, all of whom expressed their opinions with strong sentiment

Director: "Where the heck are the necklaces?"

Jewelry designer: "No one is very inspiring yet "

Jewelry designer's 4 year-old daughter: "Is anyone wearing pink?"

Me: "Yes, Kerry Russell, looks very pretty in pink but no jewelry."

Jewelry designer's husband: "Emily Blunt looks hot."

Director's wife: "Yes, gorgeous.  But would have liked to see more jewelry on other actresses. It's all very understated."

Direcotr's 11-Year old son: "I agree with my dad about the necklaces, but hey, look Heidi Klum is wearing one."

Director: "Yes, but she's missing half of her dress. If you wear a necklace does that mean you can't wear an entire dress-- or you are too over-styled?"

Everyone's a critic.

I did take all the comments in (of which there were many more) and I did agree with much that was said.  After this year's earlier award shows: Golden Globes and Academy Awards, for which style-setting actresses were accessorized mainly in chandelier earrings and a bounty of bracelets  a few more necklaces might have been a refreshing change. But I also think that the best looks were the ones that made the actresses, themselves stand out; the ones who wore their jewelry and gowns as opposed to allowing their red carpet looks to wear them.

These included Emily Blunt, who radiated old Hollywood and showed her sense of style with a floral brooch in her hair, diamond and platinum snake ring and bangle bracelet by Lorraine Schwartz. Kim Kardashian's total look also had a glamorous effect with platinum and diamond criss-cross cuff, hair pins and pinky ring, also by Lorraine Schwartz and Dianna Agron drop earrings with briolettes and bracelet by Cartier.

As far as the trends go, once again, bracelets from piles of bangles to cuffs and wide flexible styles took the spotlight, particular those mentioned above as well as Kyra Sedgwick's multi-color gemstone bracelets by Ofira. Rings also made statement including the one worn by Eva La Rue.  Chandelier's continued to be popular and those that stole the show were Eva Longorias',who looked dramatically elegant in gemstone floral danglers and an equally stunning gown.

I guess we're going to have to recommend to readers that they all have clearance sales on necklaces. So much for neck adornment of any style at all ... a shame really, but I guess that whole necklace fad had a pretty good run.

I am really bummed to see so few necklaces. They frame the face, they enhance the look of the hair style. They work in concert with the earrings, which highlight your eyes. Ladies, what's up with that?
Don't get me wrong, I like bracelets, but seriously, where do you want people's attention? Your face, your eyes, you!!!
I'm just sayin'!

Necklaces are still around: just not the over stated ones and right now with the fall clothes, Pendants are much stronger. But, women know that necklaces frame their face and they won't rule them out. They are smart enough to take certain direction and then translate it for themselves and the retailers particularly, if they are smart will continue to stick out their necks and show their customers what they have. The statement necklaces can be interpreted into more "real people" versions. I think that at many of these shows the dresses dictate the jewelry, the stylists dictate the jewelry and I do believe that the celebs who stood out most as looking beautiful wore both gowns and jewelry that worked on them. I think the ones who wore a statement piece that was bigger than their whole body, well...what i'm not sure that does the customer much good. ALL in all, I agree it would have been nicer to see more necklaces.

I love bracelets, but it's much easier to work on a computer with layers of necklaces than stacks of bangles. All that clanging on the keyboard can be a distraction.

Necklaces are great for casual or cocktail parties, but when it comes to red carpet or bridal
noting beats great earrings and a bracelet. The gown is always the main event and accessories are just that, meant to complement rather than command attention.
