Something Old meets Something New

At the  JA SHOW New York Summer Show, the over-riding message was something old reinterpreted into something new.

Inspirations ranged from ancient coins, intaglios and sealing wax motifs and carved lava to Victorian locket inspired statement pendants, thin cuff bracelets.

Choo Yilin, in the new designer gallery explains "we are trying to make jade relevant again, adding modern elements to appeal to  a younger generation of woman." Her bangles with high karat gold and oxidized silver and gemstone set bezels offer current look that can be mixed with other bracelets in a women's existing wardrobe.

Another look that focused on renewing materials was Gasia, a Turkish company that reworks watch faces from the 1800s into pendants with high karat gold bezels and rose cut and rough cut diamond accents.

Brother Wolf offer vintage medallions of saints cast in precious metals as well as symbolic pendants such as these Faith Hope and Charity discs.

Gurhan's 24K gold creates a cross-cultural feeling of buried treasures.

Leslie Greene 's stand out 18K gold rectangular pendant evokes the feeling of an antique locket.

Scott Mikolay re-invents the fob look in beautiful gemstones and a rosary bead chain, elegantly accented with diamonds

Turquoise was another trend that continues in popularity in various designer collections and incarnations. Freshest looks are have touches of yellow gold and/or diamond accents and are either in irregular oversized stones, teardrops or rose cuts or more delicate varations.  In the high end market turquoise has become seasonless and it's important to teach your customers that they can wear it year round.

Lika Behar shows turquoise with high karat gold  touches in earrings, bold rings and this irregular shaped bead with snake motif overlay.

Katie Diamond offers a bezel set necklace of round turquoise stones in varying lengths that's perfect by itself, worn with pendant or layered with a medallion or diamonds by the yard.

Dawes Designs shows turquoise in larger oval shaped stones as longer pendants and single stone cuff bracelets.

Other looks worth checking out if you couldn't make the show were

Heloisa Fitzgerald's  who made her debut at the New Designer Gallery with component earrings that are multi-functional and turn from posts into ultra long dangles and everything in between. The entire collection is interchangeable.

Margery Hirschey's Australian opal pieces that ranges from stackables to oversized statement rings also premiered in the New Designer Gallery.

Mixing classic materials such as pearls and leather cuffs and diamond intensive pieces on leather cord were also shown.

Robert Wan's multi-color pearl on black leather weave cuff  was a stand out.

Antonini's 18K white gold open wavy circle and all over pave wavy circle looked modern and hip on leather thonging.

Another favorite was Okimido's chocolate colored gold mixed with sterling silver and rose gold with a bronze alloy in an organic bangle set.

Great picks, Beth. I think it's neat to see the turquoise matched with high-karat gold. My grandmother always wore amazing Native American jewelry, which was always turquoise and silver (she was an artist and real free spirt, and it took a certain type to pull off the look). So maybe silver and turquoise is just ingrained into my thinking, but I'm liking the look with gold.
