China set to become top consumer of diamonds in future.
In the midst of an economic boon that has allowed China to rival the U.S. as a world power, no one yet knows if the growth is hollow and the Far East nation is merely a paper dragon. One thing is for certain in the meantime, however: The newfound wealth of many in this nation will allow it to surpass America in the demand for diamonds, according to Ari Epstein, chief executive officer of the Antwerp World Diamond Center. Its growing middle class coupled with a desire for gold, jade, and now diamonds, will propel the nation's consumption of the material to the forefront in coming years.
