OK, so I’ve been intrigued by golfer Bubba Watson’s $525,000 wristwatch, made by Richard Mille.

1) I never heard of Richard Mille despite a lifetime in the watch and jewelry business. 2) What is this thing made of, mithril?

Some pretty expensive models! A $440,000 tourbillon on this page.

Mille is a super luxury high-end Swiss watch manufacturer. Rafael Nadal also wears one priced around $500,000. I believe the one that Bubba wears is stainless steel, but contains a tourbillon movement. They make a similar model in platinum, but I can’t find the picture. If interested, just check out richardmille.com.

I’ve been to the web site and checked them out. But a new piece in this market at $550K? That’s in the vintage Patek orbit, and these have no real history or track record. By the way, neither Bubba nor Nadal bought those watches — they are paid advertisements from the sponsor. Nice to see some other watch companies getting into the game besides Rolex. I see McIlroy and one or two other Europeans sporting Audemars logos. Next up: Ishikawa sporting a Seiko spring drive?

Really? I think if you’re looking for mid-six-figure watches, there are plenty (“plenty” being a relative term) to choose from. Doesn’t Roger Dubuis have a $300K+ tourbillon? Someone has to strap watches on the wrists of the oil sheiks.
