WHY? To keep you and your staff on their toes, especially if many of your current competitors are struggling and you fear complacency may become an issue.

HOW? Think up a rival and give it a name. Inc magazine told the story of ePrize, an online promotion company, whose boss, Josh Linkner, created an arch nemesis he called Slither. Linkner began sending his team press releases touting Slither’s latest triumphs and introduced it as a straw man in strategy meetings. “What would Slither do?” became a common question. Slither kept everyone sharp and ready for the day a real competitor came knocking, he claimed.
