Dirty Diamond

Stories from the front lines of retail

A customer enters our store on Dec. 23, looking for something "different." I show him a .65 point chocolate diamond solitaire in a vintage 14K white gold, white diamond-accented ring. He owns an oil/water well drilling business and looking at the unusual color of the stone, says, "I use diamond drill bits that cost between $15,000 and $50,000 to replace. How much is this gonna cost me?" After giving him a price, and while looking at it under the scope, he says, "Wow... look at that color! I like it! It looks like dirt! I'll take it!!" — CAROL ORRIS, ORRIS JEWELERS, BRADFORD, PA
