British Government Suspends Export of Queen Victoria’s Coronet

A buyer is sought to keep the jewelry in the U.K.

The British government has temporarily suspended the export of a sapphire and diamond coronet that was worn by Queen Victoria, the Daily Mail reports. According to the article, the coronet, which features 11 sapphires set in gold and diamonds set in silver, was designed by her husband Prince Albert in 1840, the year of their wedding. The coronet has been sold to a buyer who wants to take it out of the United Kingdom, and the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art and Objects of Cultural Interest has placed a hold on the export until Dec. 27, in hopes that a British buyer will meet the 5 million pound asking price, and keep the coronet in the U.K.
