A pear-shaped pink diamond called “Unique Pink” sold for $31.6 million on Tuesday at Sotheby’s Geneva auction, pushing total sales for the auction to $175.2 million, a world record for any jewelry sale, Rapaport writes. The article says that the previous record was $160.9 million, also set by Sotheby’s in an equivalent auction in May of last year. Tipping the scales at 15.38 carats, “Unique Pink” was sold to an Asian private buyer for $2.1 million per carat. Sotheby’s had estimated it would sell for between $28 million and $38 million.
