WHEAT RIDGE, CO — Two men were sentenced Monday for the 2023 robbery and murder of jeweler Peter Arguello, owner of Peter Damian Fine Jewelry & Antiques, according to the Jefferson County district attorney’s office.

Prosecutors said Charles Shay, 40, received life without parole plus 120 years, while Michael James McCormack, 38, was sentenced to 75 years for killing the 64-year-old jeweler during a Nov. 2, 2023 crime spree that began as a robbery. Authorities said Arguello was kidnapped from his Wheat Ridge store, robbed and fatally shot before the men fled.

Both were convicted of first-degree murder, kidnapping, aggravated robbery and related charges. Judge Christopher Zenisek imposed consecutive sentences, citing the crime’s brutality and the defendants’ prior violent histories, prosecutors said.

Arguello’s wife, Teresa Casillas, said in a statement that their “20-year-old business was destroyed in minutes.” She said her husband was “the reason customers came to the store,” describing him as joyful, dedicated and proud of his work. Casillas criticized the justice system for delays that stretched the case over two years but said sentencing ensures “this man [cannot] hurt other families.”
