The average spend is rising.

NEW YORK — Online wedding brand The Knot has released the results of its 2017 Jewelry & Engagement Study. The biannual report surveyed more than 14,000 engaged or recently married brides and grooms from the U.S. to uncover proposal-related trends in America.

“We’re seeing proposers put more time, thought and effort into creating the perfect proposal, as well as an engagement ring they know their partner will love,” said Kristen Maxwell Cooper, editor-in-chief of The Knot. “And while proposals are less of a surprise than in years past, there’s an uptick in grooms returning to time-honored traditions, like proposing with the engagement ring in hand and getting down on one knee.”

Here are some of the key findings:

  1. Average engagement ring spend: $6,351 (up from $5,095 in 2011)
  2. Average time spent looking for ring: 3.5 months
  3. Average number of rings looked at before purchase: 26
  4. Engagement rings with a custom design: 45%
  5. Most popular stone cut: round (52%)
  6. Average carat size for center stone: 1.2 carats
  7. Average carat size for total ring: 1.8 carats
  8. Most popular engagement ring setting metal: white gold (61%)

The study found that one in four grooms “meticulously” planned their marriage proposal “down to the last detail.” The average time spent planning a proposal was just under four-and-a-half months.

Wilkerson Testimonials

Gone Fishin’ (Thanks to Wilkerson)

Whether you want to go fishing — or enjoy some of the other good things life has to offer — you can take a cue from Jim Adair and choose Wilkerson to run your retirement sale. After 38 years in business, Adair decided it was time to enjoy some free time. His Missoula, Montana store, Adair Jewelers, will stay in business but without him at the helm. It was the perfect opportunity to call in the experts in retirement sales. Adair says he spoke to a lot of people who have done retirement sales to help him make his decision and he chose Wilkerson. “Wilkerson seemed to have the best set up, the best organization, the most current marketing of any of them,” he says. “If you want to run a successful sale, you have too much money on the line to be screwing around with trying to do it yourself.”
