I TAKE MY NAME from the Greek for “deceiver” because, according to a certain Finnish mineralogist who came across me in the Ural Mountains in the 1830s, I have a striking resemblance to quartz in colorless form. My view? The only deception here is one to flattery … of quartz. I am a waaaay cooler gemstone than quartz. I am harder, rarer, and when finely faceted, offer a far more dazzling brilliance.
