Once considered a rare member of the tourmaline group, I’m now popping up all over, in Brazil, Australia, Russia, Myanmar, upstate New York and more. But it was a quiet Sri Lankan province where I was discovered in 1929. At a mineral show, you’ll invariably find me in olive-green, although I also tend to a black, brown and even white. It is also at such gatherings you’ll hear it said how I diverge from the typical tourmaline formula due to a magnesium insertion in place of one of the usual six aluminums. (What can I say? Mom insisted I eat my leafy greens.)
