This month’s gem quiz winner is Katie Dye from J. David Jewelry in Tulsa, OK.

And congratulations to our winner.

On occasion it takes someone with a passion for a gemstone to parse our quirky clues, and that seemed to be the case in March with Katie Dye from J. David Jewelry in Tulsa, OK.

“Green tourmalines are in my top tier of color-love,” she said, adding that in particular she had “much love and appreciation for this one” — uvite tourmaline, March’s mystery stone. Well done, Katie, who will receive a Jewelry Geek t-shirt. Congratulations too, to all those runners-up who made our honorable mention list. Please keep an eye on instoremag.com for April’s quiz, which will be posted soon.

Olivine? Peridot? Beryl? No … I Am The Deceiver

Consider this a test of your knowledge of the Mohs scale.

I SHOULDN’T HAVE TO say more than I’m the defining mineral for 5 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, and the hands of 20,000 knowing jewelers should reach for the sky … but then I’d have to stop talking about myself and I am a fascinating character — one with a real hunger to be all things to all people. I’m used to clean up nuclear waste, to fluoridate water, and to manufacture fertilizer. I am in your teeth and bones and while I am only infrequently used as a gemstone, I have been mistaken for much more valuable minerals such as olivine, peridot and beryl. Hence the Greek origins of my name — I am the deceiver.

THE BEAUTIFUL BUT less-than-elegantly named chrome diopside was our mystery gemstone in July. Congratulations to Stephanie Cairns of Precision Jewelers in Roseville, MI, for working through our clues and deducing the correct answer. She wins this month’s Gem Geek t-shirt. As for the 60-odd other jewelers who also submitted the right answer, keep playing. A t-shirt with your size awaits you. And in the meantime, enjoy your status as an Honorable Mention.

This Gemstone Sounds Like An Evil Planet or Skin Disease, But It’s Really Quite Delightful

This green stone offers emerald-like beauty at a fraction of the price.

ZIRCON, VARISCITE, AMMOLITE — some gemstones sound more like evil planets or skin diseases than something that could be turned into jewelry. I, too, suffer from a less than romantic name, although it’s probably a car polish that first comes to mind when you hear me mentioned. Still, what my over-literal namers lacked in inspiration I make up for with my emerald-like beauty. At a relatively low cost and readily available since Siberia’s mineral riches began flowing into the market, I make a great choice for earrings. I tend to be a little soft for ring duty — and no one is going to ask why you’re selling industrial agents as center stones.
