I Am a Gemstone With a Beauty Matched Only by My Fragility

I BEND LIGHT AND breathe fire in a way no other gemstone can match. I’m usually free of body color, twin in the most spectacular crystal formations and have an adamantine luster that makes diamonds look dull. I’m also as brittle as glass. Which renders me pretty much useless as jewelry and is known to drive lapidaries to despair. Nevertheless, allowed to sit in a temperature-controlled environment, behind glass, on black velvet, I make a spectacular addition to any rockhound’s collection.
