I’m Not Your Typical Tourmaline, But Shine Nonetheless

ONCE CONSIDERED A rare member of the tourmaline group I now seem to be popping up all over the place: Brazil, Australia, Russia, Myanmar, upstate New York and more. But it was from a quiet Sri Lankan province where I was discovered in 1929 that I take my name. On a table at a gem show, you’ll invariably find me at my olive-green finest, although I also look shine in black, brown and even white. It is also at such gatherings you’ll hear it commented how I diverge from the typical tourmaline formula due to my high levels of calcium. (What can I say? Mom insisted I eat a lot of dairy and leafy green vegetables.)
