What started as an independent designer show with 24 exhibitors has grown to be one of the premier trade shows twice yearly in New York City. Melee: The Show was created by two designers Lauren Wolf and Rebecca Overmann eight years ago and expanded to include 74 designers in the Aug. 3-5 Summer Edition at The Lighthouse in Chelsea. It showcases global talents, many of whom are bench jewelers working in various media, who all display distinctive points of view. The founders of the show explain, “The emphasis of their curation is on craft, artistry and community.” The August show partnered with Only Natural Diamonds, porcelain artist Yuko Kikuchi, and Stuller to further support independent and up-and-coming talent.
The roster of designers featured 14 first-time exhibitors, which was the largest intake of newcomers. They included CLAS, Garavelli 1920, Karin Luvaas Jewelry, Kat Liu, Koulianos Designs, Linn., Martin Bernstein, MIGHTY, Sandy Rubin, Shaya Durbin, SHREE, Tamsin Rasor, Vivianson and Venyx World. After reworking her magical collection, Svetlana Lazar, who premiered her collection at the August 2022 edition, returned after evolving her line.
Returning designers included: Adele Chefridi, Amali Annie Fensterstock, Anthony Lent, Celine Doust, Ciara Bowles, Elizabeth Street, Erica Molinari, Erin Cuff Jewelry, Lene Vibe, Ray Griffiths, Suzy Landa, Tap by Todd Pownell and Three Stories.
Here we share an overview of some of the newcomers and returning designers who offer an international take on contemporary themes: bold uses of colored gemstones, symbolic talismans, one-of-a-kind bridal and bespoke pieces that resonate with the type of personalized jewelry retailers and consumers are on the hunt for today.
