Here’s a brainstorm inspired by a creative retailer in one of the other markets covered by SmartWork Media.

A pet shop in Wenatchee, WA, hides plastic poop emojis around downtown every April 1. Customers who find one and return it to the store get a gift certificate. Last year, 25 came back within two hours according to the our story in PETS+.

They called it “April Stools Day”.

Sure, it’s a little gross. But it definitely, uh, sticks in the mind. Ewww.

Anyway, jewelers have a cleaner version of this sitting right in front of them.

Let’s call OUR event “April Jewels Day”. Just as memorable, but way less gross.

For our event, we’ll print and cut diamond emojis 💎 and hide them around downtown — coffee shops, benches, planters, wherever foot traffic flows. (Or use your 3D printer to create 3-dimensional diamond emojis.) If a customer finds one, they can return it to your store for a prize: a free charm bracelet, or a loose gemstone they can use in a custom design. And maybe one lucky finder walks away with a larger prize — i.e. a $500 no-strings-attached gift certificate.

April 1 falls on a Wednesday this year. You’ve still got time to plan something. But you’ll have to move fast.

The pet shop thought of it first. But they didn’t have diamonds.
