The sighting: Actress Emma Roberts and her boyfriend are engaged! Roberts announced the big news on Instagram by sharing a cute photo of the happy couple with the ring in view and the relatable caption, “putting this here before my mom tells everyone.”
The jewels: Roberts and her fiancé, Cody John, turned to family-owned Los Angeles retailer Platt Boutique to design Roberts’ engagement ring. The low-profile solitaire design features a luscious antique Old European cut natural diamond of warmer color bezel set in a thick, grooved 18K yellow gold band.
According to Vogue, the center stone is estimated to be around 3.5 carats and the ring is reported to be worth $180,000. The Natural Diamond Council’s @OnlyNaturalDiamonds said on their Instagram that they estimate the stone to be larger, around 6 carats.
The trends: This ring stands out because it doesn’t follow current trends, and I suspect it’s an exciting harbinger of things to come.
Engagement ring shanks have been thin in recent years, some might say too thin to support the large stones that celebrities love to choose (that cry you just heard is the sound of 1,000 bench jewelers pulling out their hair). Trends ping pong between extremes, which means we’re just about due for a reverse into chunky, chubby, substantial bands to support larger stones.
The same goes for the lack of accent diamonds here. We’ve gone from full pavé and double halos to single halos and then to hidden halos or fewer, larger side stones. Solitaires are the logical next step.
What do we think? As an antique diamond enthusiast (my own old mine cut engagement ring is twinkling up at me as I type this) and a longtime admirer of Platt Boutique, I’m absolutely delighted with this celebrity ring choice.
Roberts’ style tends to be cleverly understated and a little edgy, which is exactly how I’d describe this engagement ring. It’s genuinely interesting, appealingly un-fussy, and – most important of all – it’s unique enough that it truly feels like it reflects the personality of the couple.
Judgement: 18/10 for a fantastic and interesting engagement ring choice.
