The sighting: Model, actress and former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo is engaged! Her groom-to-be is NFL star Christian McCaffrey. If you heard “NFL star and Miss Universe” and thought this would be a ring worth seeing, you’re correct.
The jewels: Culpo’s engagement ring features a large oval-cut center diamond flanked by five-sided epaulette side stones in a platinum setting on an ultra-thin gold band. It is a Ring Concierge design, a custom version of the brand’s Whisper Thin style.
According to Ring Concierge’s website, the Whisper Thin engagement rings start at $2,600 for the setting and $10,000 for complete rings. But it’s safe to assume this this Whisper Thin ring’s cost was well above that.
According to Page Six, experts speculate that the center stone looks to be 5-8 carats and the ring is likely worth $500,000-$600,000.
The trends: Oval solitaire engagement rings have been all the rage in recent years, but they usually feature an oval alone on a delicate, plain gold band. Culpo’s ring is interesting because it sticks to the trends in terms of diamond shape and band design but deviates when it comes to side stones.
Could oval three stones be the next evolution of the oval engagement ring trend? Only time will tell.
What do we think? Those epaulets serve classic glam of a flavor that I absolutely adore, and I appreciate the fact that they’re included here even though the center stone is so large that it needed no help taking up finger space. It’s much more elegant this way than a larger round brilliant cut or an oval solitaire would have been – the side stones are why this feels like a design, instead of just the biggest possible diamond stuck to a band.
I also must that I’m pretty tired of writing about oval solitaires at this point, so I’m delighted to see this sign that the oval trend may be developing into something new!
Judgement: 14/10 for a big honking diamond that’s still thoughtfully designed.
