The sighting: Actress Mariska Hargitay recently attended the “Billy Joel: And So It Goes” premiere at the Tribeca Festival in New York City. Hargitay chose a sleek black cocktail dress accessorized with some very serious sparkle for the occasion.

The jewels: Mariska Hargitay is wearing a set of colored gemstone pieces from Sabyasachi’s High Jewellery collection.

Specifically, she is wearing a pair of earrings in 18K yellow gold with rubellite, tourmaline, iolite, garnet, old mine cut and brilliant cut diamonds. It’s quite a long pair of dangles, with glamorous sequence of gems forming each earring.

The necklace is of a similar design, with a series of diamond-surrounded warm-toned gems forming a choker. It features tourmaline, morganites, and brilliant cut diamonds.

The actress is also wearing a slim gold bangle – possibly a Cartier Love bracelet? – and a cocktail ring that wasn’t mentioned in Sabyasachi’s press release.

The trends: This look actually bucks current red carpet trends! We haven’t seen a lot of actresses in coordinated earring and necklace sets, especially not ones where both pieces are statement-sized.

The gems themselves do have a bit of a 1980’s feeling, which is a rising trend at the moment.

Also: don’t sleep on Hargitay’s influence. Yes, she’s not the buzziest new starlet in town, but her fans are absolutely committed to her and they follow her every move.

What do we think? What’s not to love? In my humble opinion, there is no better accent to a sleek black cocktail dress than a suite of major gemstone jewelry.

I especially love that the gems featured here are a little outside the norm for celebrity jewelry: instead of major diamonds or big sapphires we have iolite, garnet, rubellite, morganite, and more.

Some people might feel that the earrings are too big to be paired with that necklace, but I strongly believe that those people are wrong.

Judgement: 14/10 for this standout sparkle selection.
