The sighting: R&B legend Mary J. Blige blessed the 2022 BET Awards with her luminous presence. Often referred to as the “Queen of Hip-Hop Soul,” Blige wore an ethereal outfit with plenty of sparkle.

The jewels: Blige accessorized her white gown with an armful of diamond bracelets and rings by Pristine Jewelers, according to Instagram tags from the artist and her stylist. The bracelets and rings are glamorous, with a series of diamond bangles and two sizable diamond cocktail rings, but nothing about them is especially unusual.

What stood out to me was the earrings. Made by Mara Pairs, these earrings consist of two dangling, wavy silver oblong shapes, one suspending the other. They look like a larger version of the designer’s Small Eucalyptus earrings, a sterling silver style currently listed on the Mara Paris website for $407.

The trends: These earrings caught my eye because firstly, they’re cool, and secondly, they defy a major trend. Gold has been far and away the most popular metal in recent years, but the choice of silver for these earrings makes me want to go polish my sterling statement earrings immediately. I could easily see myself wearing a similar pair with a cute dress for an instant summer cocktail ensemble.

There’s also a notable disco vibe here. The 1970s style has been influencing current trends for a minute, but I think that full on disco is just starting to gain traction and we’ll see more of it before it’s done.

What do we think? I love this earring choice. One would have expected Mary J Blige to choose glamorous diamond dangles to go with this gown and the rest of her jewelry, but choosing these cool wavy silver discs instead brought freshness and a welcome surprise to the overall look.

The earrings are almost a note of discord, but instead of feeling out of place, they elevate the rest of the outfit and keep it from feeling stilted.

Judgement: 13/10 for extremely cool earrings worn in an unexpected way.

When There’s No Succession Plan, Call Wilkerson

Bob Wesley, owner of Robert C. Wesley Jewelers in Scottsdale, Ariz., was a third-generation jeweler. When it was time to enjoy life on the other side of the counter, he weighed his options. His lease was nearing renewal time and with no succession plan, he decided it was time to call Wilkerson. There was plenty of inventory to sell and at first, says Wesley, he thought he might try to manage a sale himself. But he’s glad he didn’t. “There’s no way I could have done this as well as Wilkerson,” he says. Wilkerson took responsibility for the entire event, with every detail — from advertising to accounting — done, dusted and managed by the Wilkerson team. “It’s the complete package,” he says of the Wilkerson method of helping jewelers to easily go on to the next phase of their lives. “There’s no way any retailer can duplicate what they’ve done.”
