The sighting: Paul Tazewell, who just made history as the first Black man win an Oscar for Best Costume Design (a well-deserved honor for his work on Wicked), has also won the most elusive award of the night: He’s my pick for best 2025 Oscars jewelry moment.

Let’s take a look and you’ll see why you should agree with me.

The jewels: Tazewell’s jewels were all from Fred Leighton and Kwiat.

Let’s start with the pièce de resistance: He wore a 1950s platinum and diamond brooch by Belperron with over 45 carats of round and baguette cut diamonds. It was a glorious midcentury design with bold and elegant swoops of baguette diamonds interspersed with clusters of lush round diamonds.

He also wore Fred Leighton Art Deco emerald and diamond swirl cufflinks in platinum and gold, as well as a Kwiat Ashoka diamond snake ring in platinum.

The trends: Many men wore brooches to the Oscars, and a few even wore them in tie position, like Tazewell, but his was the best.

What do we think? This was simply magnificent. The brooch was objectively luxurious (45 carats!), but the placement made it feel almost understated. The silhouette of the brooch, along with its heft and design, made it extraordinary. The styling was elegant and opulent and clever, exactly as sophisticated as the Oscar winner for Best Costume Design should be.

Tazewell said of his ensemble on Instagram:

In planning this classic look, I drew significant inspiration from the Black dandies of yesteryear. The debut tuxedo from Yves Saint Laurent’s 1966 collection, famously captured by Helmut Newton in Paris, provided the exact silhouette I was seeking. Dolce and Gabbana’s impeccably tailored classic black and white single-breasted custom tuxedo serves as the perfect foundation, complemented exquisitely by vintage jewelry from Fred Leighton.

The fact that historical Black fashion inspired the look that Tazewell chose for his trailblazing win made it feel all the more impactful.

Also, I have met this man’s brother, so that means I’m almost friends with him, right?

Judgement: 1,200/10 for a perfect brooch perfectly styled

Family Legacy, New Chapter: How Wilkerson Turns 89 Years of History Into Future Success

After 89 years of serving the Albany community, Harold Finkle Your Jeweler faced a pivotal decision. For third-generation owner Justin Finkle, the demanding hours of running a small business were taking precious time away from his young family. "After 23 years, I decided this was the time for me," Finkle explains. But closing a business with nearly nine decades of inventory and customer relationships isn't something easily managed alone. Wilkerson's comprehensive approach transformed this challenging transition into a remarkable success story. Their strategic planning handled everything from advertising and social media to inventory management and staffing — elements that would overwhelm most jewelers attempting to navigate a closing sale independently. The results speak volumes. "Wilkerson gave us three different tiers of potential goals," Finkle notes. "We've reached that third tier, that highest goal already, and we still have two weeks left of the sale." The partnership didn't just meet financial objectives—it exceeded them ahead of schedule.
