The sighting: Actress Ruth Negga showed up to the Independent Spirit Awards in one of the coolest and most daring jewelry looks we’ve seen all year. Let’s take a look!

The jewels: Despite how maximalist this look feels, it’s only two pieces!

On the neck we have a Tabayer choker in 18k yellow Fairmined gold with carved red jasper, Madera citrine (5.83 carat), pavé brown diamonds (2.70 total carat weight) and sapphires (9.55 total carat weight).

We have a Tabayer ring as well. It’s 18k yellow Fairmined gold ring with carnelian, sapphires (0.33 total carat weight) and brown diamonds (0.11 total carat weight).

The trends: We have all kinds of trends here: dramatic gold styles with 1980s influence, opaque stones and earth-toned colors.

Another important element here is the choice of responsibly sourced materials. Tabayer’s dedication to Fairmined gold puts it squarely in this category. It feels reductive to call this a trend – more of a mindset shift? – but either way, it is an important factor right now.

What do we think? This look won’t be for everybody – it is bold and genuinely pushes the envelope of jewelry design. The extremely thick, sculptural coils of the necklace defy expectations of how a necklace should sit on the body in a way that’s quite subversive.

And that’s exactly why I love this. Celebrities have opportunities that no one else gets to wear truly interesting things, and most of the time they squander those opportunities by choosing safe, simple pieces. These Tabayer styles are cutting-edge, and I absolutely love that they got to appear on a global stage thanks to Negga and her stylist’s creativity and confidence.

Judgement: 200/10 for two extremely cool designs.

Honoring a Legacy: How Smith & Son Jewelers Exceeded Every Goal With Wilkerson

When Andrew Smith decided to close the Springfield, Massachusetts location of Smith & Son Jewelers, the decision came down to family. His father was retiring after 72 years in the business, and Andrew wanted to spend more time with his children and soon-to-arrive grandchildren. For this fourth-generation jeweler whose great-grandfather founded the company in 1918, closing the 107-year-old Springfield location required the right partner. Smith chose Wilkerson, and the experience exceeded expectations from start to finish. "Everything they told me was 100% true," Smith says. "The ease and use of all their tools was wonderful." The consultants' knowledge and expertise proved invaluable. Smith and his father set their own financial goal, but Wilkerson proposed three more ambitious targets. "We thought we would never make it," Smith explains. "We were dead wrong. We hit our first goal, second goal and third goal. It was amazing." Smith's recommendation is emphatic: "I would never be able to do what they did by myself."
