The sighting: Taylor Swift just announced on Instagram that she and her football-playing beau, Travis Kelce, are engaged! I found out six minutes after it happened because so many people sent me the post immediately. (Thank you, friends – you do know me.)
Being the ultimate girl’s girl, Swift gave us a ring photo right away. Let’s dive in!
The jewels: The beautiful ring features a large rectangular diamond with soft corners on a thick gold band that looks like it might be adorned with engraving. The way the diamond catches the light makes me think it could be an antique or antique-inspired cut.
According to multiple media reports, this gorgeous ring was made by Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine. However, the designer has not yet commented or confirmed the story and Swift did not tag the designer in her post.
What’s the ring worth? Most estimates are in the $500,000 to $1 million range.
Tobias Kormind of 77 Diamonds says it appears to be about 8 carats and estimates a price of 500,000 British pounds ($673,000). Brides quoted Benjamin Khordipour of Estate Diamond Jewelry saying the ring appears to be 8 carats and estimating its value at $500,000.
On the higher end, InStyle quoted Laura Taylor of Lorel Diamonds saying the ring looks to be 10 to 12 carats and is likely worth $1 million. Neil Dutta of Angelic Diamonds estimated it to be a 7- to 10-carat diamond worth $1.3 million to $1.5 million.
Sources are also calling the center stone an “old mine brilliant-cut,” which means I have the same engagement ring diamond cut as Swift (but I did it first!)
The trends: Chunky gold engagement rings were already on the rise, and this will catapult them into the trend stratosphere. Same for antique diamonds and elongated diamonds! Artifex Fine also only works with natural stones, so this is a big win for Team Natural Diamonds.
I’m also curious to see if we’ll see more engraved engagement ring settings popping up – the trend has skewed heavily toward minimalist settings in recent years, and I’m excited to see whether we’re due for a change.
And if you doubt this ring’s trend potential, I need you to know that the engagement announcement Instagram post got 1.7 million likes in the first 15 minutes.
What do we think? I love this! I would honestly have expected something daintier for Swift, but I absolutely love that she went for a bold setting. I’m dying for a closer look at the engraving on the sides – I’d bet that every bit of it is highly symbolic.
The fact that America’s golden couple chose an independent designer to make their engagement ring makes me SO SO SO happy. If we needed more proof that Swift is a true jewelry girlie, this is it.
Judgement: 13 million out of 10! I’m thrilled for them and I love the ring.
