The sighting: Viola Davis wore statement hoop earrings and a sleek red suit for an interview with the Kering Women in Motion project during the Cannes Film Festival.

The jewels: Viola Davis is wearing the Aquatic Dreams Snake Hoop Earring by Alexis Bittar. The design features 14K matte yellow gold-plated brass serpents twined around vivid enamel coral hoops. Each snake is textured with scales and features a sparkling crystal. The style retails online for $295.

The trends: Hoop earrings are a perennial favorite that have been enjoying a surge in popularity the last few years; especially creative statement hoops like this, which offer a twist on the classic style.

Quite a few contemporary brands are finding inspiration in the romance of Victorian and Georgian era sentimentality at the moment, a trend that I personally enjoy very much. Both the coral color and the snake motif here are peak Victorian vibes. It’s a strong and interesting aesthetic with a rich tradition of significance.

What do we think? I love it when celebs wear interesting jewelry that I can actually afford, and this design checks a lot of my personal boxes. The color is fun and the sculptural element that the snakes introduce is even better. Davis wore these to a daytime event, which is the perfect venue for a celeb to rock high quality demi-fine pieces, IMHO.

The event was a talk for Kering’s Women in Motion program, a project dedicated to combatting violence against women and fighting for diversity and gender equality in the entertainment industry. The interview is available online here, if you want to hear Davis’ thoughts and see these earrings in action.

Judgement: 13/10 for a strong, beautiful choice!

When There’s No Succession Plan, Call Wilkerson

Bob Wesley, owner of Robert C. Wesley Jewelers in Scottsdale, Ariz., was a third-generation jeweler. When it was time to enjoy life on the other side of the counter, he weighed his options. His lease was nearing renewal time and with no succession plan, he decided it was time to call Wilkerson. There was plenty of inventory to sell and at first, says Wesley, he thought he might try to manage a sale himself. But he’s glad he didn’t. “There’s no way I could have done this as well as Wilkerson,” he says. Wilkerson took responsibility for the entire event, with every detail — from advertising to accounting — done, dusted and managed by the Wilkerson team. “It’s the complete package,” he says of the Wilkerson method of helping jewelers to easily go on to the next phase of their lives. “There’s no way any retailer can duplicate what they’ve done.”
