The sighting: Singer Doja Cat recently attended the Schiaparelli Haute Couture show in Paris and her head-turning ensemble set the internet aflame.
The jewels: Doja Cat is wearing a large pair of Schiaparelli Haute Couture earrings that feature roughly cut red gems. Their color reminds me of enormous fire opals, but Schiaparelli’s most elaborate jewelry tends to be demi-fine, so I’m betting these are too.
For a closer look at the earrings, scroll to the second photo in the embedded Instagram post.
The singer is also covered in 30,000 Swarovski crystals, which were hand-applied to her skin over an intense five-hour session with makeup artist Pat McGrath’s team and designer Daniel Roseberry.
The trends: The look is definitely too extreme for the average consumer in its current form, but it represents several relevant trends: monochromatic dressing, tone-on-tone matching, crystal makeup, and statement earrings over necklaces for formal appearances.
Your customers probably aren’t going to spend 5 hours getting dolled up like this, but they might consider wearing red earrings with a red dress, choosing statement earrings for a special occasion, or splurging on some fancy crystal eye makeup appliques.
What do we think? Does Doja Cat look like the world’s fanciest tomato, or perhaps an alien lifeform whose grandfather was a strawberry? Yes. But she’s also…making it work?
I know it’s wild, but hear me out: it’s not like she wore this to the grocery store! She was attending and appearing in a Schiaparelli Haute Couture show in Paris. If there’s a more appropriate moment to go majorly avant garde, I can’t imagine what it would be.
Hilarious side note: Doja Cat faced a lot of criticism from TikTok influencers for not wearing dramatic false eyelashes with this look, so the singer clapped back by covering her face in extra fake eyelashes for her next appearance.
Judgement: 16/10 for fully embracing haute couture weirdness at the right place and time.
