The sighting: Actress Zoe Saldana took home a golden statue for Best Supporting Actress from the 2025 Oscars, but it wasn’t her only major moment of the night. Saldana also had the honor of being the very first person to wear a new and noteworthy Cartier High Jewelry necklace.
The jewels: Zoe Saldana is wearing the brand new Cartier Pantheres Versatiles convertible necklace.
According to Harpers Bazaar, this extraordinary Cartier High Jewelry treasure took 4,827 hours (34 months!!) to create and takes the form of a thick, articulated snake-like series of diamond links embellished with onyx accents, a panther head, and a 10.10-carat Zambian emerald.
As if that weren’t impressive enough, this treasure is transformable! It can be paired with an extra strand that features a second panther head to make a longer necklace or worn wrapped around the wrist to create a bracelet.
The trends: White diamond necklaces – especially collar-length ones – were a major tend of this awards season. This necklace bucks the trend by including emerald and onyx, but it is still a nod to one of the reigning trends of the year.
What do we think? This necklace is gorgeous and interesting and I love a transformable jewel! I also think it’s really cool when celebrities choose unusual High Jewelry styles for red carpets instead of going for understated, simple designs.
I wonder if Saldana’s choice of a transformable jewel is a nod to the fact that her winning movie, Emilia Perez, is largely a about a transgender character’s transition? If so, the metaphor about the beauty of transformation is both applicable and poignant.
Is this the perfect gown to pair with this jewel, though? The necklace doesn’t feel connected to the rest of the look and the onyx panther spots are fighting a little with the gold embellishments on the bodice.
That said: I prefer an interesting jewel that doesn’t match perfectly to a boring one any day!! And I love that Saldana is wearing diamond studs with this dramatic necklace.
Judgement: 9/10 for a very cool Oscars jewel (that maybe would have been better with a different gown).
