AFTER THE LONG SAG-AFTRA strike, it was refreshing to see the stars out and shining in their finery at the 2023 Gotham Awards honoring the year’s most outstanding achievements in cinema. Many of the A-listers wore black, which might have been boring if it hadn’t been the backdrop for the jewelry, much of which was breathtaking. One of the best looks of the evening was styled by Kate Young and worn by Julianne Moore, who is always impeccably dressed and bejeweled on the red carpet. She achieved near perfection wearing Belperron diamond Corne ear clips and a Belperron vintage Tourbillon convertible cuff, which can transform into a brooch, with her St. Laurent gown. I am not sure whether the Corne earrings were the originals that Suzanne Belperron created or the ones inspired by them that are made today. My guess is that they are the contemporary ones. Ward Landrigan bought the company and its extensive archives, and his son Nico Belperron has taken over the helm; there are quite a few designs that are modern versions of the archival jewelry. The Tourbillon bracelet is a vintage piece that is versatile and multifunctional.

Michelle Willams also wore Belperron to the same event — read about it in a post from Becky Stone.

Suzanne Belperron was a pioneer in the field of jewelry design who started her career at Boivin and went on to launch her own collection of bold, ultra-modern pieces. Her clients were iconic women in their own right, including Elsa Schiaparelli, the Duchess of Windsor and Diana Vreeland. She was considered one of the most influential designers of the 20th century, breaking down boundaries for women jewelry designers in a one-time male-dominated industry. She never signed her pieces, asserting, “My style is my signature.” And it still is today.
