THE OSCARS AND other events during awards season celebrated vintage jewelry, diamonds and statement pieces. But my two favorite looks were worn by Margaret Qualley and Michelle Yeoh, who wore their necklaces backwards. It’s a style I have been noticing on actresses on the red carpet since at least 2010.

Yeoh wore a diamond tie Boucheron necklace and Qualley a Chanel High Jewelry diamond necklace, both with low-cut, back-bearing dresses.

The exit-making quotient was turned up high on Sabrina Carpenter at the 2025 Grammy Awards and Taylor Russell at the 2024 Venice International Film Awards.

Those were just the most recent versions of this sexy way to wear diamond and other gemstone necklaces in reverse. Although many of the stars wore these often awe-inspiring pieces with gowns that were high in the front and dipped low in the back, that’s not the only way to show off a long strand of pearls, diamonds or your own statement necklace. You can wear them down the back of a cashmere sweater or even to dress up a T-shirt dress in warm weather months. You just need to play around with different pieces in your wardrobe. In any case, here are some backwards necklaces we have seen and covered in the past.

How Howes Diamond Jewelers Closed a Location — and Opened the Door to What's Next

Dan Howes grew up in his family's jewelry business, eventually taking the helm of two locations his father launched in 1964. When it came time to consolidate, he turned to Wilkerson. "It was a pretty easy decision," Howes says, citing the company's strong reputation and a friend's successful experience. Wilkerson's proven sales roadmap delivered — meeting projected financial goals and guiding the process every step of the way. "This is their profession. They have it dialed in."
