I AM ALWAYS thrilled when an independent jewelry designer gets a piece or more in a film, and such is the case of Monica Rich Kosann finding out that not one, but two of her pieces have been used in the Christmas 2024 release of Babygirl. Written and directed by Halina Reijn, it is a drama about a high-powered woman who begins an affair with a much younger man who interns for her. Kidman plays the CEO of a company, Harry Dickson is the younger man/intern and Antonio Banderas plays her husband. While the movie brings to mind Adrian Lyne’s 2002 film Unfaithful with Diane Lane, Richard Gere and Oliver Martinez (although Lane does not play a high-powered CEO), it makes me wonder how anyone could cheat on Banderas or Gere and with the cost of their family at stake. But let’s not get into my ideology or my movie crushes at different points on both Banderas and Gere. Let’s get to the jewelry at hand.
At present, we don’t have intel on how Kosann’s necklace figures into the plot, but according to Kosann’s Instagram post, it does. We will just have to wait and see, which gives me something to look forward to along with all three star performances. (They received good reviews at the Venice and Toronto film festivals. But in the meantime, while watching the trailer, I noticed that Kosann’s “Design Your Own Neckace” 18K gold Mini Compass and Anna Locket positioned at different lengths on one chain seem to be worn by Kidman’s character throughout the film. The other piece Kidman wears is Kosann’s Points North Drop Earrings. They seem to blend into her character without being the focal point. At the same time, you definitely notice them, which is the true essence of jewelry that helps build character development.
