Then: Kirsten Dunst in the 2006 film Marie Antoinette.
KIRSTEN DUNST’S STYLIST clearly knows what an awe-inspiring pair of antique earrings can do for different modern day looks and how to enhance Dunst’s already glowing complexion. For two premieres of the The Power of The Dog, the earrings were loaned to Dunst by the legendary house of Fred Leighton, where Rebecca Selva, chief creative director, has dressed numerous stars in jewelry. She seems to always get it right and has styled Dunst in antique danglers for numerous events.
What’s most interesting is that both pairs of earrings hark back to those that Dunst wore for her role in Sofia Coppola’s 2006 Marie Antoinette, which was a feast for the eyes, from sets to costumes to jewels. All of the authentic antique pieces were provided by none other than Fred Leighton. Filmed partially on location in Versailles, the film created a modern take on a period when excess and decadence ruled the court — and what fun it was to watch!
Now: Kirsten Dunst at Power of The Dog premieres
Selva worked with Academy Award-winning costume designer Milena Canonero, who had worked on numerous period films, and chose jewelry that would pop on screen even if it wasn’t completely true to the time. Girandole earrings, riviere necklaces, hair ornaments and paste pieces all figure into styles worn in the film.
But back to the present. Dunst’s earrings are indicative of the style sought after by collectors of antique jewelry. And they’re popular today with those who prefer contemporary spins on styles that give a nod to the past with antique cuts in diamonds and similar shapes in girandole and pendant looks.
