World of Pearls
No longer limited to simple strands, pearls are taking the jewelry world by storm.
STORY BY BECKY STONE
Pearls have been getting around lately, from high fashion catwalks to it-girls’ curated ear stacks and even on the auction block, as a historical treasure of Marie Antoinette’s is slated for sale in November. Many of these pieces are aspirational, but the message is clear: the public wants to see what the pearl can do!

The pearl earring is the little black dress of jewelry: ever-versatile, always appropriate, and endlessly appealing. They’ve graced the lobes of everyone from world leaders to leading ladies, aristocrats to actual art (just ask Vermeer). These cutting-edge pearl earrings show that this classic category still has a few tricks up its sleeve.

These alluring little orbs have fascinated humans for many hundreds of years. It stands to reason that we’ve gotten quite good at imagining these lustrous lovelies into different designs by now. These designs illustrate the staggering variety that can be packed into as deceptively simple a descriptor as “pearl jewelry.”
