The little guys have to band together.

With large corporations relying increasingly on big data and analytics, Zoe Baird, CEO and president of the Markle Foundation, writes for The Hill that a “dangerous digital divide” is forming. Small businesses with fewer financial resources, she says, cannot match the investment that bigger enterprises are making in data and analytics, which could eventually put the little guys at a competitive disadvantage.

“Data has enormous power to transform a business, identifying efficiencies across an operation and spurring innovation. With advanced analytics, companies can forecast demand, optimize supply chains, identify emerging markets, and increase exports to the world’s growing middle class. … In order to grow small businesses, secure the jobs they create, and enable them to expand their operations, we need to break down the barriers that are preventing them from accessing big data,” Baird writes. She then proposes a few solutions, recommending that small businesses join forces with each other.

When Sales Beat Projections, You Know Wilkerson Did Its Job

There are no crystal balls when it comes to sales projections. But when Thomasville, Georgia jeweler Fran Lewis chose Wilkerson to run the retirement/going-out-of-business sale for Lewis Jewelers and More, she was pleasantly surprised to learn that even Wilkerson could one-up its own sales numbers. “Not only did we meet our goal, but we exceeded the goal that Wilkerson had given us by about 134%,” she says. After more than 40 years in the business, Lewis says she decided a few years ago to “move towards retirement.” And she was impressed by Wilkerson’s tenure in the industry. Overall, she’d recommend the company to anyone else who may be thinking it’s time to hang up their loupe. “As a full package, they’ve done a very good job and I’d definitely recommend Wilkerson.”
