(PRESS RELEASE) PALM SPRINGS, CA — The Independent Jewelers Organization (IJO) embarks on a bold new chapter as Stephen Barnes officially assumes ownership, marking a significant milestone in the organization’s evolution. During IJO’s semi-annual conference in Palm Springs, outgoing owner Jeff Roberts made a landmark announcement: the official transition of ownership to Stephen Barnes, a longtime IJO leader with a track record of success.

Stephen Barnes
“Stephen has been an integral part of the IJO family for over 25 years and has played a vital role in our organization’s success,” said Roberts. “When I appointed him as President in August 2023, I was seeking fresh leadership to propel IJO into the future. Since then, he has demonstrated remarkable vision and dedication, making his transition to owner both natural and exciting. I have no doubt he will lead IJO to even greater heights.”
A Legacy of Excellence in the Jewelry Industry
Barnes’ journey in the jewelry industry began at an early age, mastering hand engraving, watch repair, and jewelry restoration. His passion for craftsmanship evolved into award-winning jewelry design. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from the University of Mt. Olive and earned his Graduate Gemologist (G.G.) credential from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Further solidifying his expertise, he attained the esteemed title of Master Graduate Gemologist (M.G.G.) through IJO—an honor held by fewer than 40 professionals worldwide.
With over 35 years of experience in retail jewelry, Barnes has successfully managed his family’s multi-store business and operated his own store as an absentee owner. His expertise spans business growth, financial strategy, and transition management. As a sought-after consultant, he has helped countless businesses develop systems, tools, and processes to drive long-term success. He brings not only deep expertise and experience to the position, but a warmth, and deeply relational approach to management. He understands and lives the challenges and opportunities facing all of the members of IJO.
A Bold Vision for IJO’s Future
Barnes’ deep passion for the industry and IJO’s mission fuels his ambitious vision for the organization’s future.

“IJO’s strength is our unity,” Barnes stated. “As we move forward, we will continue to elevate the industry while upholding the highest standards of integrity and innovation. Since stepping into leadership, I have focused on modernizing our educational programs, expanding IJO TEAMS, and enhancing Next Generation initiatives. Our new technology resources, marketing tools, and high-level workshops are designed to empower our members like never before. Moving ahead, we will forge strategic partnerships that enable independent jewelers to achieve unprecedented success. I look forward to connecting to all our members on a more personal level over the next few months to better understand how we can help them continue to grow. I’m truly honored to lead IJO into this exciting new chapter.”
Honoring Jeff Roberts’ Enduring Legacy
For over 50 years, Jeff Roberts has been the heart and soul of IJO. From his early days recruiting members to leading as President, CEO, and owner, his impact on the organization has been immeasurable. In addition to his leadership at IJO, he successfully operated a chain of four jewelry stores from 1980 to 1992, bringing firsthand retail expertise to his role.
“IJO has been my life for more than five decades, and now is the perfect time to pass the torch to a leader I trust wholeheartedly,” Roberts reflected. “The relationships I’ve built with our members are invaluable, and while I will certainly miss my role, I have complete confidence that Stephen will lead IJO with passion, integrity, and a visionary approach.”
