Weekly Dates and To-Dos: March 30-April 5 (Week 13 of 52)

WEEK 13

12 weeks passed | 40 weeks remain

Mar 30 – Monday

Today’s Quote: “Don’t let yesterday take up too much of today.” Will Rogers

CELEBRITY BIRTHDAYS: Céline Dion (1968, “My Heart Will Go On”), Eric Clapton (1945, guitarist), Tracy Chapman (1964, “Fast Car”), MC Hammer (1962, rapper), Warren Beatty (1937, actor/director), Norah Jones (1979, singer), Paul Reiser (1957, “Mad About You”)

MARKETING: Partner with a nail salon — no one stares at hands more than a manicurist’s clients. Leave behind $50 gift cards the manicurists can pass along when someone admires their ring or dreams aloud about an upgrade. One card costs you nothing until it’s redeemed — and when it is, you’ve just acquired a new customer with a built-in reason to visit.

OPERATIONS: Book your spring HVAC service this week. Don’t wait until the first warm day fogs your showcases and makes your staff miserable. A tuned system protects your merchandise, your comfort, and your electricity bill.

WEEKLY SPIFF: New game: Gumball Machine. Make a qualifying sale and you get to put a coin in and collect a gumball. Different colors mean different cash prizes. Plus, prepare to start our full-month April spiff — “Make the Call” — a month-long clienteling contest. More here.

Q1 REVIEW: The first quarter of 2026 is over. Before you get swept into April, block 30 minutes to look at your numbers. How did January–March compare to last year? What sold? What didn’t? What surprised you? A quick review now sets the tone for a stronger Q2. Don’t skip this.

MORE DATES: National Doctors Day, National Take a Walk in the Park Day

Mar 31 – Tuesday

Today’s Quote: “A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.” John A. Shedd

CELEBRITY BIRTHDAYS: Ewan McGregor (1971, “Star Wars”, happy 55th!), Christopher Walken (1943, actor), Rhea Perlman (1948, “Cheers”), Angus Young (1955, AC/DC), Shirley Jones (1934, “The Partridge Family”)

FEATURED DATE: World Backup Day. Do a manual backup of all your customer and financial records and store it offsite. Your system should be doing this automatically — check that it is — but a manual backup is insurance against the catastrophe your automatic system was supposed to prevent. Takes 15 minutes. Could save your business.

SALES MEETING: Today’s topic: team-selling and turnovers. Do it right … and your closes will skyrocket.

LOOKING AHEAD: Passover begins at sundown tomorrow. Easter is Sunday. Holy Week is here. Cross pendants, religious medals, Star of David necklaces, Chai pendants, and faith-inspired jewelry should be front and center in your cases. Both holidays are major gift-giving occasions — don’t let them sneak up on your displays.

MARKETING: Your bounce-back flyers from last week should be in every bag starting tomorrow. If you haven’t printed them yet — do it today. A simple “Come back in May for [offer]” card is one of the cheapest, most effective repeat-visit tools in retail.

MORE DATES: National Crayon Day, National Tater Day, Transgender Day of Visibility

Apr 1 – Wednesday

Today’s Quote: “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” Steve Jobs

CELEBRITY BIRTHDAYS: Ali MacGraw (1939, “Love Story”), Taran Killam (1982, “Saturday Night Live”)

FEATURED DATE: April Fool’s Day. Skip the whoopee cushions. April Fool’s Day is one of the best liquidation events on the calendar if you play it straight: “April Fool’s Day Sale — It’s No Joke! — 50% off select in-case merchandise.” Lock your best pieces in the vault, fill the cases with aging inventory, and watch what happens. Jewelers who’ve tried this report making more in a single afternoon than they had all month — and customers invariably pick up full-price impulse items on the way out. It works because the framing is fun, the discount is real, and nobody feels like they’re being sold to.

FEATURED DATE: Passover begins at sundown. “Chag Pesach Sameach” to your Jewish customers. This is an eight-day holiday of family, remembrance, and tradition. If you carry Judaica-inspired jewelry — Star of David, Chai, Hamsa, Tree of Life — make sure it’s visible this week. A simple social media acknowledgment goes a long way.

MONTHLY PROJECT — LIVE SELLING: April’s project: Experiment With Live Selling Online. Platforms like Whatnot and TikTok Shop give you a brand-new sales channel that didn’t exist a few years ago. This week’s assignment: download both apps and spend a few hours watching other jewelry sellers. Notice how they describe pieces, handle bidding, and build urgency. Pick one platform to start with. (Read more.)

BIRTHSTONE: Welcome to Diamond Month. April’s birthstone needs no introduction — but your marketing might. Don’t just display diamonds; tell their stories. The 4Cs are table stakes. What sells is emotion: “This is the stone that was there when he asked.” Begin planning a diamond event for later this month — a restyling event recently brought in $35,000 for one Brain Squad member over two days.

MORE DATES: International Fun at Work Day, National Walking Day, National Greeting Card Day

Apr 2 – Thursday

Today’s Quote: “Holding a grudge is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” — attributed to various sources

CELEBRITY BIRTHDAYS: Michael Fassbender (1977, “X-Men”), Emmylou Harris (1947, country legend), Marvin Gaye (1939, singer — born on this day), Hans Christian Andersen (1805, author — born on this day)

FEATURED DATE: Holy Thursday (Maundy Thursday). The countdown to Easter is on. If your Easter promotion is running, make sure your team knows the details cold. If you’re doing nothing — at minimum, post a warm “Wishing our customers a blessed Easter weekend” on social media tomorrow or Saturday. Acknowledgment costs nothing.

FEATURED DATE: National Reconciliation Day. Ann Landers knew a thing about feuds — she didn’t talk to her twin sister (Dear) Abby for years. While grudges can occasionally motivate, they mostly consume time and energy. Is there a vendor, colleague, or former customer you should reconnect with? Today’s the day. Even if they don’t respond, you can move on.

STAFF: Easter weekend means adjusted hours for many stores. Make sure your team knows the schedule — and post it for customers on your website, social media, and front door. Nothing frustrates a buyer more than showing up to a locked door.

MORE DATES: World Autism Awareness Day, National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day, International Children’s Book Day (Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday!), National Burrito Day, National DIY Day

Apr 3 – Friday

Today’s Quote: “Why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves up.” Thomas Wayne, “Batman Begins”

CELEBRITY BIRTHDAYS: Eddie Murphy (1961, comedian/actor, happy 65th!), Alec Baldwin (1958, actor), Jennie Garth (1972, “Beverly Hills, 90210”), Adam Scott (1973, “Severance”), Cobie Smulders (1982, “How I Met Your Mother”), Wayne Newton (1942, “Mr. Las Vegas”)

FEATURED DATE: Good Friday. Many customers observe this as a solemn day. Be aware of the tone in your marketing — save the loud promotions for next week. A quiet social media post wishing customers a peaceful Easter weekend is the right note.

WEEKLY SPIFF: If you start spiffs on Friday, it’s time to launch this week’s game: Gumball Machine.

LIVE SELLING: Have you watched a few live jewelry sellers on Whatnot or TikTok this week? Jot down three things they did well and one thing you’d do differently. You’re building your playbook before you go live. (Read more.)

THING TO STOP DOING THIS WEEK: Stop treating every customer the same. A first-time browser needs a different approach than a repeat buyer picking up a repair. Train your team to read the room: Is this person here to look, here to buy, or here to pick up? Adjust your energy accordingly. One size never fits all.

MORE DATES: National Find a Rainbow Day (colored gemstone display!), National Chocolate Mousse Day, World Party Day, Don’t Go to Work Unless It’s Fun Day

Apr 4 – Saturday

Today’s Quote: “Excellence is not a skill. It is an attitude.” Ralph Marston

CELEBRITY BIRTHDAYS: Robert Downey Jr. (1965), David Cross (1964, “Arrested Development”), David Blaine (1973, magician), Graham Norton (1963, talk show host), Craig T. Nelson (1944, “Coach”)

FEATURED DATE: National Handmade Day. If you carry handmade or custom-designed pieces, put them front and center. Post a behind-the-scenes video of your bench jeweler at work. Feature the tool marks, the imperfections, the human fingerprint that separates a handcrafted piece from something stamped out by a machine. That’s not a flaw — that’s a selling point. Customers increasingly want to know who made what they’re wearing and how.

FEATURED DATE: NCAA Final Four — Day 1! The Final Four tips off today in Indianapolis. Even if basketball isn’t your thing, it’s a major cultural moment. Foot traffic patterns change — families are out, people are socializing, energy is high. Make sure your store looks inviting for the walk-by crowd.

INVENTORY: April is also Stress Awareness Month. You know what’s stressful? Dead inventory. Pull your aged inventory report and make a plan. Mark down anything over 18 months. Melt, redesign, clearance, or consign. Free up that capital for pieces that actually move.

MORE DATES: International Pillow Fight Day, National Love Our Children Day, Jeep 4×4 Day

Apr 5 – Sunday

Today’s Quote: “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” — Psalm 118:22

CELEBRITY BIRTHDAYS: Pharrell Williams (1973, musician/producer), Lily James (1989, “Downton Abbey”)

FEATURED DATE: Easter Sunday. Happy Easter! If you’re open today, cross pendants, religious medals, and faith-inspired jewelry should be in your most visible cases. Fill a basket of plastic eggs with random discounts and let customers pick one — JP Jewelers in St. Charles, IL, found this irresistible to shoppers. If someone pulled only 10%, the store let them grab another egg. Low cost, high engagement. And don’t forget a basket of chocolate eggs at the door for the littlest visitors — a browse becomes a memory.

PERSONAL: If you’re closed today — stay closed. Spend the day with people who matter. The store will be there tomorrow. You won’t get this Sunday back.

MORE DATES: National Deep Dish Pizza Day, National Dandelion Day, National Caramel Day
