Add-On Craziness
ADD-ONS INCREASE PROFITS without increasing overhead. This game rewards staff for suggesting that second item — the earrings to match the necklace, the bracelet to complete the set.
- Create a points system: 10 points for one add-on, 25 points for two add-ons on the same ticket, 50 points for three or more.
- Award bonus points as the dollar amount of add-ons increases.
- Post a master scoreboard in the back room where staff tally their points daily.
- Set up a prize showcase where points can be redeemed — gift cards, cash, merchandise, extra time off.
- Run the contest for one to two weeks to keep intensity high.
What this encourages: This trains staff to never let a customer leave with just one item. The escalating points reward multiple add-ons on a single ticket, pushing salespeople to think in terms of complete looks and gift sets rather than individual pieces.
DISCLAIMER: Spiffs are not appropriate for every store, but can add a sense of excitement to the sales process for some. Will it work? It depends on your store, and it depends on your staff. If you haven’t tried these types of contests, give it a try and see what happens. But if you do try it, make a big deal of it. These work way better when they’re an exciting, shared experience.
