First In, First Out

Every store has pieces that have been sitting there so long you’ve stopped seeing them. They’re just part of the furniture now. This game makes your staff see them again.

The idea is simple: your oldest inventory pays a bonus when someone sells it. How you set it up is your call. Here are two ways to do it.

The List Approach: Pull a report from your POS system of anything that’s been sitting over a year. Print it. Tape it to the wall in the backroom. Anything on that list pays a flat bonus — say $25 — on top of regular commission.

The Dot Approach: Stick small colored dots on the tags of your oldest pieces. Red for over a year at $25. If you want more tiers, add yellow for six months to a year at $15, green for over 90 days at $5. If you go this route, hide the dots — bottom of the tag, inside the box. You don’t want customers thinking they’re buying clearance.

What this encourages: Your staff will suddenly notice pieces they’ve been walking past for months. That emerald ring in the corner? It generates an extra $25 bonus now. And when customers ask about it, your team gets to say “that one’s been waiting for the right person.” Which is a pretty good sales line that also happens to be true.

DISCLAIMER: Spiffs are not appropriate for every store, but can add a sense of excitement to the sales process for some. It depends on your store, and it depends on your staff. If you haven’t tried these, give it a try and see what happens. But if you do try it, make a big deal of it.
