While I’m Sometimes Called Landscape Quartz, My Name Actually Means “Sludge” In Portuguese

PEER INSIDE ME and you’ll find something remarkable: frozen gardens of chlorite, feldspar, and mineral wisps suspended in crystal-clear quartz, each one a tiny landscape that’s been locked in place for millions of years. Collectors love me precisely because no two stones share the same inner world. It seems almost cruel, then, that my formal name traces back to the Portuguese word for “sludge.” I’m much more amenable to trade names such as “Landscape quartz” or even “Garden quartz”.
