(PRESS RELEASE) On April 2, the American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) announced on the cancellation of its GemFair Las Vegas event, scheduled for June 1-5. The move comes after the recent postponement of the JCK and Luxury Shows as well as the cancellation of Couture and the Las Vegas Antique Jewelry & Watch Show until 2021.

Here is the full text of the message from AGTA to readers:

During this time of uncertainty, what remains clear is that we are indeed living through a period unlike any of us has experienced in our lives. The rapid escalation of people diagnosed with the COVID-19 virus is showing no evidence of slowing, and it will certainly be some time before this scourge is brought under control.

Foremost in our thoughts is the health and safety of our families, friends, and colleagues. After a thorough assessment of the risk posed by this virus, AGTA has decided to cancel its 2020 AGTA GemFair Las Vegas, June 1-5, 2020, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. We had hoped that we could move forward with the event if the risk declined, but the national and global health community is united in the opinion this will not happen in the short time between now and the scheduled dates of the show. All our efforts now must be directed to slowing the spread of this virus.

We are deeply appreciative of our members who have supported the show and of our clients who visit our show and share our passion for color. We encourage everyone to seek reasoned guidance from your local health professionals and community leaders and practice responsible behavior.

The AGTA staff will be working remotely for the foreseeable future but remain available to assist our members and the greater jewelry community. You may contact the office at 800-972-1162 to leave a message or email [email protected]. Visit www.agta.org to view updates on this and other issues.

We are here to help, and we sincerely hope for the health and wellbeing of you, your families, and your communities.

Honoring a Legacy: How Smith & Son Jewelers Exceeded Every Goal With Wilkerson

When Andrew Smith decided to close the Springfield, Massachusetts location of Smith & Son Jewelers, the decision came down to family. His father was retiring after 72 years in the business, and Andrew wanted to spend more time with his children and soon-to-arrive grandchildren. For this fourth-generation jeweler whose great-grandfather founded the company in 1918, closing the 107-year-old Springfield location required the right partner. Smith chose Wilkerson, and the experience exceeded expectations from start to finish. "Everything they told me was 100% true," Smith says. "The ease and use of all their tools was wonderful." The consultants' knowledge and expertise proved invaluable. Smith and his father set their own financial goal, but Wilkerson proposed three more ambitious targets. "We thought we would never make it," Smith explains. "We were dead wrong. We hit our first goal, second goal and third goal. It was amazing." Smith's recommendation is emphatic: "I would never be able to do what they did by myself."
