555.55-Carat Black Diamond Could Sell for $6.8M at Auction

A 555.55 carat fancy black diamond will go up for auction via Sotheby’s next month.

The diamond, known as “The Enigma,” is “the largest Fancy Black Natural Colour diamond in the world,” according to Sotheby’s. It was listed as the largest cut diamond in the world in the 2006 Guinness Book of World Records.

“To have a natural faceted black diamond of this size is an extremely rare occurrence and its origins are shrouded in mystery – thought to have been created either from a meteoric impact or having actually emerged from a diamond-bearing asteroid that collided with Earth,” Sotheby’s states on its website.

The auction is set for Feb. 3-9 in London. Sotheby’s expect the diamond to sell for at least $6.8 million, The Associated Press reports.

Cryptocurrency will be accepted as payment on the diamond. It will be offered without reserve.
