BUTTERFLY JEWELS ARE back in a variety of interpretations and are showing up on numerous celebrities. We saw them in 2018-2019 on Meghan Markle before the Sussexes gave up their royal titles. But recently, I noticed a photo of her in her butterfly earrings on one of her Instagram accounts, and it brought me back to when she wore the earrings on her first royal tour in Australia and announced she was pregnant for the first time. The diamond and gold studs originally belonged to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. She has worn them on several occasions since then but was ahead of the trend that was about to land on the jewelry community. In the recent events of 2022, Mariah Carey wore a large diamond butterfly ring when she was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (which I wrote about in the most recent issue of INSTORE). Olivia Rodrigo wore a De Beers Portrait of Nature high jewelry butterfly ring to the Met Ball and also wore butterflies in her hair. A diamond Chopard butterfly also fluttered on Julia Roberts’ blazer at the premiere of the limited series Gaslit, in which she starred as Margaret Mitchell.

Butterflies have flitted in and out of style every decade or so, it seems. However, in a time when change is essential and our challenges continue to grow, the butterfly is an apropos motif to signify the transformations, renewal and the hope we need globally and in our personal lives.
