Gem Legacy Announces School Toilet Initiative

(PRESS RELEASE) ROYAL OAK, MI — Gem Legacy announces a new kids-focused initiative that will provide proper sanitization, air filtration, and plumbing for 10 new toilets to be used by 1,500 Tanzanian school children of the Sanawari Primary School, age 5-10. Gem Legacy is a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to education, vocational training, and local economies in East African colored gemstone mining communities.

Currently, the kids share five toilets and 15 holes in the ground that have recurring issues of sanitation, overflow/backup, and rodents, in addition to not having doors to provide privacy for girls. Building 10 new toilets (including new building (doors, windows), toilets, plumbing, air filtration, septic tank, and sinks with heated water) will increase the overall holistic health of the students. The school, founded in 1942, provides a well-rounded education through 31 teachers preparing students for successful futures. Girls are more likely to leave school early due to marriage and needing to assist in their family home. The Sanawari Primary School is dedicated to encouraging girls to remain in school as long as possible.

“We’re excited to add another initiative within our mission of uplifting the marginalized in gem sourcing regions,” says Roger Dery, Gem Legacy founder. “Improving quality of life for the Sanawari kids with proper sanitization and filtration throughout their private spaces is an effort that will leave a legacy on generations of students. This is something we may take for granted, but will be a game-changer for them. A $10 donation sponsors one child’s use of a toilet forever!”
