Jeweler Thwarts Suspected Power-Cutting Thieves

A jeweler in Yorba Linda, CA, thwarted suspected burglars who he believes cut the power to his store.

David Heyman and his wife drove past their business, David Hayman Jewellers, on a Sunday and noticed the power was off, CBS Los Angeles reports.

Heyman became suspicious and called police.

The Jewelers’ Security Alliance recently issued a “code red” amid a string of jewelry-store burglaries in which the culprits cut power lines. The organization said it has identified 50 cases of such burglaries at U.S. jewelry stores in 2019.

“The special task force that called me a half-hour later was convinced it was these burglars coming again,” Heyman was quoted saying.

Orange County Sheriff’s Department deputies hid in the store, and at about 3 a.m., their wait paid off. Two suspects “came in through the front door with a crowbar, damaging two cases, and bolted when they saw the deputies,” according to CBS Los Angeles.

Deputies apprehended two suspects, both of whom are Chilean nationals. Other suspects are still at large.
