Jewelry Stores Allowed to Reopen in South Carolina

Jewelry stores are among the businesses allowed to reopen this week in South Carolina after being closed due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Gov. Henry McMaster issued an order that allowed certain types of retailers to open as of 5 p.m. April 20. The order also allows public beach access, with local governments to restrict access at their discretion.

Businesses included in the new order:

  • Furniture and home-furnishings stores
  • Clothing, shoe, and clothing-accessory stores
  • Jewelry, luggage, and leather goods stores
  • Department stores, with the exception of hardware and home-improvement stores
  • Sporting goods stores
  • Book, craft, and music stores
  • Flea markets
  • Florists and flower stores

Hardware and home improvement stores were excluded because they weren’t among the businesses required to close under the original order.

Businesses that reopen “must adhere to strict social distancing requirements, operating at 20% occupancy or five (5) customers per 1,000 square feet, whichever is less,” according to an announcement from the governor’s office.

They also “must not knowingly allow customers to congregate within six feet of one another, excluding families.” And they must follow relevant guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Businesses that must stay closed for now include gyms, barber shops and salons, WOLO-TV reports.

“We’re not opening things up all the way, but we’re just going out gradually just like how we came in gradually,” McMaster was quoted saying.

CNN has compiled a list showing where each state stands on reopening.
