Judge the Jewels: Colman Domingo Pairs a Bow-Tie Brooch With a Historic Ring at the Oscars

The sighting: Actor Colman Domingo walked the Oscars red carpet in a very stylish, impeccably accessorized outfit. You know we’re going to talk about the jewelry!

The jewels: Domingo is wearing a Louis Vuitton suit with fabulously embellished buttons, David Yurman High Jewelry, and an Omega watch. The immediate showstopper of this look is the bow tie brooch, featuring an orange-yellow gemstone surrounded by diamonds, nicely accented by the bracelets, watch, and rings below.

Domingo is also wearing a very special agate pinky ring: a jewel that belonged to Bayard Rustin, the civil rights activist that the actor portrays in his film, Rustin. The piece was a gift from Walter Naegle, Rustin’s partner.

When asked about his accessories on the red carpet, Domingo told E! correspondent Laverne Cox that he “wanted to shine just like a diamond.”

The trends: I love that the men’s formal brooch has become a more frequent red carpet fixture, and I think that trend is here to stay for now. I even caught a clip of red carpet commentary where fashion designer Christian Siriano was asked to comment on Colman Domingo’s ensemble and his response was “always be brooching!”

What do we think? It’s an understatement to call this look chic – Colman Domingo’s Oscars ensemble is so good that it singlehandedly reminded me that men’s red carpet fashion can actually be exciting.

We’re not going to focus on the elegantly flared pants, exquisite tailoring, or cowboy boots (!!), because that’s off topic. But the rings, the bracelet and watch combo, the brooch in the bow tie, the embellished buttons!! There are so many details to get excited about here and the very best part is that they’re all so thoughtfully deployed that no element feels like it’s fighting with any other for attention.

Judgement: 1,200/10 for this visual masterclass in what it means to be dapper.
