The sighting: Congratulations are in order for Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco!! The pair announced their engagement on Instagram on the evening of December 11, 2024 and they very generously gave us several ring close-ups right away.
The jewels: According to Vogue, Selena Gomez’s engagement ring is a sizable marquise diamond set on yellow gold pavé shoulders and an estimated value of $200,000 to $1 million.
(In my opinion, the shoulders look like they have a line of accent diamonds rather than pavé, but the effect is beautiful either way.)
The Daily Mail quotes jeweler Laura Taylor who estimates that Gomez’s marquise diamond is a whopping 8 carats and likely of exceptional quality, with VVS1 clarity and in the D-F range – which would make sense with that $1 million value estimate.
Fans may remember that Gomez wrote her love for this particular diamond shape into her 2015 song, Good for you, when she sang “I’m on my marquise diamonds / I’m a marquise diamond / Could even make that Tiffany jealous.”
The marquise cut is one that has always been associated with romance and sensuality, as the legend of its origin claims that the first marquise diamond was commissioned by King Louis XV of France as an homage to the perfect lips of his lover, Marquise de Pompadour.
No mention yet of who designed the ring, but hopefully that information will surface at some point because I would love to know!
The trends: This ring is verrry interesting because it is a departure from several of the reigning trends in celebrity engagement rings.
It’s still an elongated fancy diamond cut, but it’s a marquise, rather than the oval diamonds that dominated recent celeb engagements.
The ring is also set in yellow gold, rather than white or platinum, and it is set on a relatively thick shank with sizable accent diamonds, rather than the whisper-thin settings that have been popular.
What do we think? I find Gomez and Blanco adorable together and I wish them well. As for the ring? It’s a knockout!
I love that the ring isn’t a giant oval boulder with a teeny tiny setting. I personally would take a marquise over an oval any day, but the fact that Gomez sang a song almost 10 years ago about marquise diamonds makes it even more perfect.
Judgement: 100/10 for a beautiful ring and a couple that looks genuinely happy.
