Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker Debut Custom Beaded Name Necklaces: Judge the Jewels

The sighting: Reality star Kourtney Kardashian and her boyfriend, Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker, debuted custom Jewelry by Veronique name necklaces in a pair of moody black-and-white Instagram Story selfies.

The jewels: KK’s necklace is romantic, with freshwater pearls and silver hearts, while Barker’s goes for rocker glam with dark faceted beads, a cross, and a skull. The chunky beaded style is whimsical kindergarten chic, a nostalgic and playful look reminiscent of summer camp DIYs. Kardashian has referred to Jewelry by Veronique’s founder, Veronique Vicari Barnes, as a “high school bestie,” so these beads aren’t just a purchase, they are a love token made by a friend.

The trends: This high end crafty-chic look is a trend that’s been around for a few years and it’s still very popular in certain demographics. The trick with a piece like this is convincing the end consumer that something made from inexpensive materials makes sense as a high value purchase.

What do we think? It is somewhat baffling to see a Kardashian rocking jewelry that looks like it could be recreated by an elementary schooler with a craft kit, but the necklaces really are cute – and maybe when you’re so wealthy that you have the resources to buy almost anything, choosing a low-key look that doesn’t scream “I’m expensive!” is truly the ultimate in opulence.

Judgement: 7/10 for style, 3/10 for actual luxury
