The sighting: There were many glorious statement necklaces at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, but I think my favorite moment of creative necklace styling came from actress Salma Hayek at the premiere of Emilia Perez. Let’s discuss!
The jewels: Salma Hayek is wearing two different very dramatic necklaces with her sequined black gown. Thanks to celebrity style blogger WWWJewels, we know that they are both vintage Boucheron from the 1970’s and 1980’s.
Both necklaces are from Boucheron’s Private Collection. The shorter necklace is the Tortue necklace, in yellow gold with coral, wood, and diamonds, from 1987, while the longer one is a Serpent necklace in gold with coral, onyx, and diamonds, from 1974.
The trends: This look is a departure from current red carpet trends, but it is actually a fantastic reflection of quite a few more day-to-day jewelry trends: layered statement necklaces, influences from the 70’s and 80’s, elegant use of hardstone, large chain links, and collar necklaces.
What do we think? It is spectacularly unusual to see a celebrity layer statement necklaces on the red carpet and even more unusual to see it done with pieces that use less typically glamorous materials – we don’t see much wood, coral, or onyx on red carpets these days.
This is a very bold style move and Hayek has more than enough presence to carry it off. I love that the dress is sparkly, it makes the choice of mostly matte gemstones even more impactful
Judgement: 17/10 for an inspired moment of red carpet jewelry creativity.
