Man Accused of Buying $100,000 in Jewelry with Dead Person’s Credit Card

He also used the person’s ID, police say.

Authorities say a man bought thousands of dollars worth of jewelry in Connecticut using a deceased person’s credit card.

Anthony Ranko, 29, has been charged with criminal impersonation and forgery, along with credit card fraud, NBC Connecticut reports

Police had received a number of reports of a man using a dead person’s credit card and ID to make purchases at jewelry stores, according to the news station.

Ranko was arrested in Wallingford. He’s due to appear in court on June 5.

The value of the jewelry purchased was about $100,000, according to authorities.

Police say Ranko is apparently a transient, the New Haven Register reports.

Ranko is also wanted in Texas and Louisiana on similar allegations, according to the newspaper.

A 71-year-old jeweler in Brooklyn, NY, was attacked in a parking lot by a robber who took diamonds and other items from him, the New York Daily News reports. Elie Hakoun suffered “a black left eye, split lip and stitches from the beating,” according to the newspaper. Police said the jewelry stolen was worth about $80,000. It wasn’t Hakoun’s first brush with a violent thief. In 2006, he was shot in the chest during a robbery of his store, Numero Uno Jewelry.

Police say thieves hit a jewelry store in Underground Atlanta, taking $200,000 in merchandise, Fox 5 Atlanta reports. Four men were involved in the burglary at Diamond and Co.,  according to authorities.
