Pamela Froman Still Has the Magic Touch

Unique textures, fantastic color combos mark this decorated designer’s collection.

Pamela Froman finds creative inspiration everywhere, even in her dreams.  “I have endless ideas,” she says, “and I can never make every single idea that I have. I have boxes and boxes of drawings and I look back at things I have drawn over the years. Other times, it’ll come to me bizarrely in a dream. Or I’ll take apart an old design and put it together in a different way.”

Although she’s rarely stuck, if she is, she’ll take time to daydream or to look out at the ocean, near her home in LA.

Froman studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, first pursuing a major in fashion and then switching to jewelry. She moved to Paris and designed jewelry as a freelancer before returning to the U.S. and ultimately opening her own business 11 years ago.

Q&A With Pamela Froman

Why did you launch your business?

I can design any look. So I kind of lost myself, designing for other people. I didn’t have my own vision and I needed to find it again. An actress friend asked me to design her wedding band, and from then on I began working with crushed and mixed-metal pieces. I sent in my portfolio to Rising Stars at JCK, and I got in the first time. So I had to have a company. That’s when I started my business.

Name a highlight of your career.

One of the most exciting nights in my life was during my second year in business, I won first place in gold in the Town & Country Couture Award. It was my second year, and I thought no way was I going to win in the gold category. I was on such a high. And then a couple years ago when I won a WJA Award for Excellence.

What don’t most people know about you?

I was a magician’s assistant, so I know a lot of the secrets. The magician would put me in the box, take the knives, cut me in three, and all that fun stuff.

What jewelry do you wear all the time?

I wear an ombré pink and yellow eternal scroll thumb ring. And my Cleopatra ring — a snaky, scroll ring — and my Headlight hoops. And my leather wrap bracelet, the last couple of years.

Are you influenced by trends?

I don’t really go by trends, but that’s not to say I don’t have ear climbers because they work with my collection. As for color, I don’t know how many people in fine jewelry really look at the Pantone color of the season and think `I have to get a pair of earrings in sea green.’ If you happen to have a piece in the Pantone color, great, but I don’t think too many jewelry designers think about that.

What’s new this year?

For the Couture show, I’m introducing a lot of bright colors. When you see them it makes you happy. I’m into Spesartite garnet, magenta pink sapphire, tanzanite. And I’m adding more leather wraps to the collection.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

My 12-year-old son, Hudson.
